Get Summer Going 3

Finally, the weather outside the window is beginning to match the month of the year and summer is on! This week we are herewith some more tips to help you keep your home and garden in sync with the seasons.

Swap like for light: This idea is not as radical as it initially sounds – how about getting some light weight curtains for the summer? Play with softer colours and lighter cottons, new curtains really don’t need to be expensive. As well as remarkably affordable readymade curtains being available, why not use it as an excuse to take up a new hobby and learn to use a sewing machine? Imagine how satisfying it would be to learn how to run up your own pair!

Lay the table afresh: Think again when it comes to getting ready for dinner. Think about exchanging your usual placemats for bamboo, or something decorated in vibrant summer colours? While you’re at the table, how about having a centrepiece focused on seasonal fruits like melon, kiwis, pomegranates, berries etc. The more fruit that is in there, the more colourful and appealing it will look.

Smells like summer: As is often the case, it is all too easy to forget how evocative our sense of smell is. Swapping to things like citrus or light floral scents for candles or air fresheners will really help to evoke summer and freshness from the moment you walk in the door.

This week we are looking at more tips designed to make your home and garden feel that summer vibe – whether or not the weather decides to play along!

Bring your garden indoors: Why shell out on flowers from a shop?  At this time of year you can get colourful flowers from your own garden so why not cut a few and put them in a vase to add a touch of vibrancy to any room.

Fresh juice anyone? Fresh fruit is readily available and affordable at this time of year, so why not keep a big pile of fresh oranges and a jug ready for whenever you have a few spare moments.  Having fresh juice every day will make summer feel extra special and only takes a minute.

Be beach ready: Keep beach towels rolled up ready somewhere easily accessible.  They are always bright and cheerful to look at and having them close to hand will avoid a scramble when it’s time to head out for picnic lunches or days at the beach.  You could try storing them in a big beach tote bag, French market basket or enamel bucket.

Freshen up the beds: nothing beats new bed linen for a welcome sense of newness!  Indulge in some nautical stripes or bright colours to give you a fresh summer feel and a welcome change from the dreary winter.  You can often get hold of bed linen at very inexpensive prices at discount household stores.

Get Summer Going

Yesterday it was chucking it down with rain, today the sun is out and you can see people sunbathing in every park. Such is the nature of this bizarre country we inhabit. We all have a natural inclination to get outside more as the seasons change, even if the rain doesn’t necessarily go. This week we will be starting a new series designed to give you a few tips to make sure you get the most out of the summer months – whatever the weather!

Encourage wildlife: You can help encourage garden birds and bees by selecting colourful and varied plants and flowers. If you don’t have one already, consider putting up a bird house as this is a great opportunity to see them close-up. A good option to encourage bees is planting some sweet pea as bees will help any vegetables that you may be growing. Bees love them so this will also come in handy for cross-pollination.

Look after your lawn: the majority of gardens have a grassed area, and where there is one this will often be the focal point. It is therefore well worth the time invested in mowing it weekly (you may need to be flexible around the rain!) and trim the edges. Now is a great time to reseed any areas that are looking a bit bare as the weather is just starting to warm up. You will be surprised just how big a difference to the overall garden a well-tended lawn makes and you will be glad you did the groundwork when you are lying in the sunshine enjoying a barbecue later in the summer.
