Rags to Riches

This project in a detached villa in Surrey demonstrates how intelligent spatial planning can transform the way a family home is experienced. We reconfigured a dated internal arrangement to create a brighter, more connected living environment centred around the garden and open-plan family life. The original layout contained a utility room positioned directly within the kitchen which interrupted views to the garden, so the redesign strategy relocated the utility room into the converted garage, allowing the kitchen, dining and family room to open into one uninterrupted space.

This garage conversion and carefully planned rear extension improved circulation and functionality while preserving the distinct character of the villa. Large glazed bifold doors were incorporated into the extension to maximise natural light and strengthen the visual and physical connection to the garden without overcomplicating the existing structure.

The new layout establishes a generous open-plan family room and dining area while maintaining distinct zones for relaxing, entertaining and everyday living. The result is a fluid transition between inside and outside living, creating a calm and sociable atmosphere throughout the ground floor.

A defining aspect of the completed home is the client’s love of African art and culture, reflected throughout the interior styling and landscaped garden with tasteful sculptures and evocative paintings in striking mahogany contrasted with bright, exotic tones. These carefully curated decorative pieces add a vivid personality to the contemporary architectural framework and reveals a layered and highly personal design language that balances modern architecture with expressive interior character.
